Lions Support 9/11 Week of Service through Community Outreach Day

Written By: Samantha Contreras

On the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, The University of Ƶ – Fort Smith provided community services throughout the early morning on Saturday in honor of those that lost their lives.

“I am proud that so many students made it a priority to spend their Saturday to volunteer. They were enthusiastic and productive,” said Susan Hotz, adjunct professor of Dental Hygiene at Ƶ. “Everyone worked together and made a job a source of fun.”

Students in LionHeart dispatched to local nonprofit agencies, the Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council, Sack Lunch Program, and The Arc for the River Valley.

Alyssa Burns, student assistant for LionHeart, says, “I think it’s important to actively create events and ways to help remember the lives lost during 9/11, as well as the first responders who selflessly served. That’s why this week and this event are so important to me.”

More than 63 student and faculty volunteers signed up to help across the Fort Smith community with several members from the Dental Hygiene program.

The Arc for the River Valley’s executive director Francy Ford, says the help of the LionHeart Leadership team were a delight and provided wall painting and deep cleaning services for the building that has not been repainted since 2004.

“As a non-profit organization, having a good program is always top priority. It was wonderful to have the support of Lions Heart to be able to provide the resources we need to really develop The Arc for the River Valley,” said Ford.

The Lions Community Outreach Day (LCOD) typically hosts volunteer opportunities in April. However, the Student Activities office decided to host another volunteer event for the 9/11 Week of Service.
